tour story

We'll guide you through a hidden back alley amidst the skyscrapers, where you'll discover ramshackle Taoist street shrines next to dumpsters and air-conditioner compressors. Though the statues are aged and peeling, the daily fruit offerings remain fresh.

We'll share the poignant story of the eerie underworld gods, the 1st and 2nd Granduncles (also known as Black White Impermanence), and explain why laborers and police officers were particularly fond of them.

You'll learn about worship rituals involving everyday objects imbued with symbolic meanings, such as umbrellas, abacuses, opium pipes, and even Guinness Foreign Extra Stout. We'll also show you a unique Goddess of Mercy statue perched on a restaurant roof ledge.

As we stroll from sunset into night, from Yang to Yin, you'll gain an appreciation of the role of gods in Singapore's heroic nation-building story.

This tour was developed by Say Tian Hng Buddha Shop, one of Singapore's oldest heritage businesses (established in 1896).

Please note that this tour does not involve visiting temples, spirit mediums, or Say Tian Hng Buddha Shop.

The program is secular and suitable for guests of all religions and races. No prior knowledge of Taoism is required.

  • Discover the origin story of a riverside tragedy unknown to many devotees.
  • Learn about unusual worship objects such as abacuses, palm leaf fans, and "red-tongue dog" Guinness stout.
  • Understand why devotees choose to worship these gods over mainstream deities.
  • Use your phone torchlights to explore a hidden, dumpster-filled back alley and uncover ramshackle street shrines dedicated to related deities.
